Calamitous Comebacks and Other Curious Catastrophes

No good deed goes unpunished.

Jim Murphy’s confrontation with Joanna Andrews’ blackmailer resulted in a shooting which has left Joanna’s husband Matt and Jim’s partner Richard Devonshire fighting for their lives. It has also drawn the attention of Westview’s crack police commissioner, Christine DeMarcus, who senses something fishy in the death of Joanna’s former lover, Rabun Perdido. Christine’s dogged pursuit of the truth threatens not only Joanna’s freedom, but also Matt’s. It also threatens Christine’s working and personal relationship with her co-commissioner Randy Reinisch—also a former lover of Joanna’s.

Mobster Bo Novak has assumed Steve Walters’ life as heir to a vast fortune, and his machinations have gotten Steve dumped into a horrid Eastern European prison; all this in Bo’s latest and most elaborate attempt to lure Sterling Smullen to his death. Meanwhile, Sterling’s friends Candy and Hudson Winnock must deal with the reappearance of their own nemesis, Ruth Branch, after she’s prematurely released from prison.

Jim’s secret mission remains just that, as does the nature of the information he’s trying to get from Richard—although the arrival of several new faces in Westview may shed some light on exactly what the big mystery is. Elsewhere, Len Castleberry continues his hot-and-heavy affair with Robin Cesare, who harbors a secret of her own—and as secrets go, it’s a doozy.
